Russian warplanes killed more than 200 militants from the Islamic State extremist militia in a recent air strike in Syria, the Defence Ministry says.
The planes destroyed an armed convoy of at least 20 vehicles that were heading to the eastern Syrian city of Deir al-Zour, the ministry said in comments carried by state news agency Tass.
Islamic State has been trying to regroup and establish a stronghold at Deir al-Zour, the ministry said. It did not specify the date of the attack.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based organisation monitoring the conflict, confirmed at least 70 Islamic State militants were killed in a Russian airstrike on a convoy in countryside west of Deir al-Zour on Friday. DPA
