Goldsborough campsite vandalised
Hokitika Department of Conservation staff members Ricky Croft, left, and Evan Smith work to repair the bottom half of the Goldsborough camping ground after it was destroyed by vandals over the weekend.
The vandalism stretched over 60m and was discovered on Monday during a routine inspection of the popular summer camping spot.
“It looks as if one vehicle with mud tyres has ploughed up the grassed campsite, turning it into a quagmire and spraying mud over the shelter and signs,” Mr Croft said.
DOC assigned three staff members to clean up the mess yesterday, but says the campsite will have to be closed off to visitors for some time.
Communications ranger Inger Perkins said the cost of the cleanup would have to be met by DOC, diverting funds from other planned projects.
“The Goldsborough site is a really special location that is highly valued by locals and visitors for camping, gold panning and walking. It’s disappointing that this mindless act by one or two idiots can spoil others’ enjoyment of this area.”
In summer, the Goldsborough campsite can see up to 110 visitors a week.
