Delhi coaching spot for Morgan
West Coast boxing trainer Rhys Morgan has been confirmed as co-coach of the New Zealand boxing team for the 19th Commonwealth Games, in Delhi, India, from October 3.
Morgan’s stable star, Nathan McEwen, who will fight for New Zealand in the middleweight grade at the games, is currently at a week-long-training camp in Palmerston North.
Morgan, who was also co-coach of the New Zealand team at the recent Oceania Games, in Australia, said he was “stoked” to get the new appointment.
“It has been a dream of mine for a long time and it’s come true,” he said today.
“I had been appointed head coach of the New Zealand women’s team for the World Games, in Barbados, but as that clashed with the Commonwealth Games,
I turned that post down in
the hope I would get the nod for India.”
As a build-up for the games, New Zealand Boxing will
host a Samoan team in Auckland at which McEwen will get the opportunity to even the score with his conquerer in the Oceania Games.
Morgan said McEwen was beaten 2-1 in that bout, but he was confident he could turn the tables.
After the Auckland tournament the New Zealand team will head for the Australian Institute of Sport for final preparation for the Commonwealth Games.
