Coll leads NZ squash upset
Greymouth squash player Paul Coll led the New Zealand junior team to upset victories over Germany and Mexico and a new ranking of sixth, at the World Championships in Ecuador last week.
New Zealand had been seeded 11th and Coll, 18, playing No 1, won four of his six games in the teams event and took the fourth ranked junior in the world, Rudi Rohlmuller, to five sets after trailing 0-2.
Coll was hampered by a tough draw in the individual competition, losing to the third seeded Frenchman, Lucas Serne, in the second round.
The New Zealand team beat Guatemala 3-0 (Coll beat Bryan Bonilla 11-3, 12-10, 11-4); beat Mexico 2-1 (Coll beat Miled Zarusa 6-11,
11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 11-5); beat Venezuela 3-0 (Coll beat Daniel Prato 11-6, 11-5, 10-12, 11-6); lost to England 0-3 (Coll lost 0-3 to Charles Sharpes); beat Germany 2-1 (Coll lost to Rohlmulle); and lost to India 1-2 (Coll beat Aditya Jagtap 12-10, 11-6, 1-5).
