The polar blast brought snow to parts of Dunedin and Central Otago and a sleep-in for some Dunedin parents today.
Junior rugby and football games in Dunedin were cancelled because of the bitter conditions.
Otago Rugby Football Union community rugby manager Richard Perkins said fields were too sodden to be played on.
Residents reported snow falling on Mt Cargill in Dunedin about 6pm.
