Whataroa repels Ross challenge

After a tight first half the Whataroa rugby team pulled way to repel a Woodham Shield challenge from Ross yesterday, winning 15-0.
Whataroa coach Kevin Hill said a Dave Crouchley try gave the home team a 5-0 lead at the break and, spurred on by a crowd of at least 300, Whataroa added a Gary MacRae try in the second spell and a conversion and field goal to Corey Deans.
Lock, Poss Jenkins, and fullback Oscar Pamment were the Whataroa players of the day, while prop Casey Beech and lock Tim Schroder won the awards in the Ross side.
Hill said it was a tight match and Whataroa would get little respite because Franz-Fox-Haast Combined would also mount a strong challenge this Sunday, and bring a horde of supporters with them.
“There’s always a great rivalry with the boys from down south. I’d say that we will get 500 watching this Sunday’s game.”
