Turf's up at Kaniere School

Kaniere School is celebrating completion of its new all-weather turf areas, the culmination of a $45,000 project.
The project was co-ordinated by the home and school committee and was finally completed a week ago.
It incorporates two separate areas — a multi-use marked sports court and a play area marked with traditional snakes and ladder games, doubling as a numeracy teaching tool for junior pupils.
Kaniere Home and School Committee co-ordinator Ann Jones said fundraising started three years ago with the annual school fair.
The school had raised well over $20,000 which, with a $20,000 grant from the Lion Foundation, enabled installation of the new astro-turf surface early in the year to replace the “tired” asphalt.
“The old courts needed replacing ... it actually works out the cost is not much different from asphalt,” Mrs Jones said.
The school board of trustees will drive the next project, to build a school hall.
