Thieves target Ahaura in overnight crimewave

By Viv Logie

Ahaura residents awoke to a crime wave this morning, after several garages and vehicles were broken into and two cars stolen overnight from the Grey Valley township.
Complaints to the police started rolling in between 11 o’clock last night and 1 o’clock this morning.
Police say the thieves left the town about 1am in a stolen black 1990 Nissan Terrano stationwagon, registration number WH3429.
A Greymouth police spokesman said anyone who saw the vehicle should not approach the occupants but “dial 111 straight away”.
The thieves had earlier stolen a ute from outside a Camp Street house, abandoning it a short distance away.
As police were investigating that, they were told another vehicle had been abandoned on the riverbed below the Ahaura River bridge. That vehicle, a silver Holden Commodore with frontal damage, had been reported stolen from Christchurch a few days ago.
An alert was issued today to all police stations on the West Coast for sightings of the stolen stationwagon as police did not know which direction it had headed. Late this morning, a police team was in Ahaura undertaking numerous scene examinations.
