Split decision goes against Morgan

Ex West Coast welterweight boxer Bowyn Morgan lost his Commonwealth Games quarter-final bout on a controversial split decision overnight.
Morgan was touted as a strong medal hope for the New Zealand team, but lost to England’s Scott Fitzgerald in a bruising encounter in which both boxers went at each other hammer and tongs.
The closeness of the contest was reflected in the scoring, which only just went in favour of Fitzgerald, 29-28, 29-28, 28-29.
Fitzgerald was able to squeeze past the Coaster despite Morgan opening up a cut from one of Fitzgerald’s earlier fights.
The Englishman told the Sports Mole website that it had been a really difficult fight.
“I knew how strong and fit he (Morgan) was, and I knew he was going to push me all the way. I had to grit my teeth, and it shows I have good levels of fitness,” Fitzgerald said.
