For the first time in 12 years the South rugby team will get its name etched on the Woodham Shield -- the pinnacle of South Westland rugby -- after beating Hari Hari 21-8, in Fox Glacier on Saturday.
Whataroa held the shield last season and repelled the first challenge from Ross, but was then was beaten by the Franz-Fox-Haast Combined team (South) last weekend.
Hari Hari had the final challenge, on Saturday, but did not have the
firepower to withstand the southern assault.
The shield was delivered to the Fox Glacier sports field in style -- a skydiver dropped in with the shield attached to his chest.
The South cheerleaders were also in full voice at the game after hitching a ride with the help of Glacier Helicopters, Fox-Franz Heliservices and Helicopterline.
