Shield stays in Whataroa

Whataroa reigned supreme in the final Woodham Shield match of the 2013 season, beating Hari Hari 42-3 on Sunday to keep possession of the coveted South Westland trophy after three undefeated games in the series. The grassroots rugby games are fiercely competitive, by both players and supporters, and the showdown on Sunday was no exception. By half-time the score was 6-0 in Whataroa’s favour. But not to leave empty handed, Hari Hari dug deep to finish with three points on the board. Before they lost out to Ross in 2009, Whataroa dominated the shield for over a decade. It will now hang pride of place in the Whataroa Hotel until next year.
