Kaniere School pupils Jorja Schroder and Alyssa Maffey with their prototype scarecrows. The senior pupils are busy designing and mocking up the scarecrows for the new school garden. Teacher Michelle Phelps said that once they had perfected the technique the class hoped to create a whole family of the bird-scaring devices. “Each scarecrow will be themed, so there might be a city scarecrow or a scarecrow dressed up ready for the ball.” The children are looking for donations of scarecrow worthy clothing items and footwear, in particular old waistcoats, gumboots and gloves. They are also on the lookout for plastic two-litre bottles destined for recycling bins for another project that is in the pipeline. “We have a design and plan to create a hothouse out of the old bottles so we will willingly accept all donations,” Mrs Phelps said.
