Rotary celebrates 70th

Greymouth Rotary president Vinay Chandra, left, Ken Williams, Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn and Rotary district governor John Rickard joined 70 past and present members at Shantytown for the organisation’s 70th anniversary, on Saturday. Mr Rickard summarised the many achievements of Rotary locally, including its role in originally developing Shantytown and building things such as the Arnott Heights viewing platform, information kiosks and bus shelters. He then presented the Rotary’s highest award, the Paul Harris Fellowship, to Ken Williams of Coastwide Honda for his support for the Bookarama fundraiser, and to Mr Kokshoorn for his service to the community. Former Rotary International governor Bill Boyd also attended and spoke about the role of Rotary in the world, particularly its programme to eradicate polio.
