Quartzopolis Classic celebrated

The inaugural Quartzopolis Classic, which will become an annual mountainbiking adventure race based in Reefton, was held on Saturday.
In typical Reefton fog, a field of over 100 mountainbikers travelled from Reefton to Big River and through to Waiuta on part of the goldfields journey, before returning to Reefton.
The course covered over 35km — 60% of it historic road and 40% pack track.
The first rider home was John Heaphy-Postles in 2 hours 33 minutes; the last competitors arrived at the finish line in a little over five hours.
The race for first female home was a close one, with Leigh Champion taking it out on in 3 hours and 10 mins, and less than a second behind was Kate Hawes.
Many competitors say they plan to return next year to break their individual times or have a go at the record.
