Obscure sign to be highlighted

After years of lobbying, the Westland District Council has agreed to upgrade the signs at the entrance to the Hokitika central business district in order to make them stand out.
The council has been lobbied for the upgrade since 2009, led by the business group.
Its annual submission to the council draft annual plan this year again asked for the lettering to be made more prominent.
“We notice that the shrubs have been cut back recently, which did help a little but we feel that the lettering is still very obscure,” Enterprise said.
Ideas raised by the group include painting the letters gold or placing a back board behind them.
The council finally agreed, opting to spend about $1000 to upgrade and highlight the signs this year. Cr Murray Montagu voted against the proposal.
