A new shopping complex is on the drawing board for central Hokitika, although details remain under wraps.
Property developer Evan Jones said in a statement yesterday that his company, Evan Jones Construction, was about to start work on the complex, which would host six to eight shops.
Mr Jones owns both the former Red Lion Tavern site, on the corner of Gibson Quay and Sewell Street, and the former Club Hotel and Commercial Flats site, in Revell Street.
He declined to comment any further on the proposal but said more information would come to light shortly.
Mr Jones is also working on a development to transform the former Westmeats site on the northern outskirts of Hokitika into a commercial and industrial hub.
The Seaview site could house six businesses including the Evan Jones Construction depot, a precast concrete factory and the SPCA.
Resource consent documents for that development have been lodged with the Westland District Council, but not for the shopping complex.
