Tai Poutini Polytechnic is bringing part of its music programme back to the West Coast, with the potential to offer more courses here later on.
Starting next year, the polytechnic’s Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand (MAINZ) will offer its one-year certificate in foundation sound and music course at the Greymouth campus, back where it started in the early 1990s.
By 1999 the programme had shifted to campuses in Christchurch and Auckland so it could expand.
West Coast students will be able to study the basics of musical performance, digital recording, mixing and production without leaving home, though they will need to go to Christchurch or Auckland if they want to move beyond the foundation course.
Tai Poutini Polytechnic chief executive Allan Sargison said the possibility of bringing more MAINZ courses to Greymouth would depend on the response received.
“We’ll try it and see.”
The Christchurch earthquakes left the MAINZ Live Sound building in Armagh Street badly damaged, but the High Street campus was repaired and officially reopened in July.
In September, the polytechnic also announced it was opening a campus in South Auckland to run the MAINZ foundation course.
