West Coast leaders have signed their support for the proposed Haast-Hollyford highway.
In a joint statement today, the mayors of Westland, Buller and Grey, and the chairman of the West Coast Regional Council, have asked the Government to support the project.
Haast Hollyford Highway Ltd chairman Durham Havill described the heads of agreement as a “historic moment for both the West Coast, Southland and for the entire South Island”.
“This is as significant for the West Coast as the (2001) $120 million government settlement for compensation for the cessation of native logging on the West Coast,” he said.
“We now expect Land Information NZ Minister Maurice Williamson to require his staff to immediately explain how the road line between the Cascade and the Westland district boundary was removed from the cadastral in 1976 without the legal authority to do so.”
