Lightning blasts Reefton


September in Reefton was notable for the worst thunderstorm for many years, as lightning lashed the skies for most of the 10th and 11th days of the month.
Weather recorder Tony Fortune said electrical appliances were damaged and some stock had died of lightning strikes.
“This storm will be remembered by many in the district for some time,” Mr Fortune said.
It was also a very wet month, with 326mm of rain being logged. The wettest September in the past 50 years was in 1969, when 420.3mm fell on the township. Of last month’s rain, 78mm fell in the thunderstorm on September 10.
The average minimum temperature was 3degC, the average maximum was 13.4degC and the warmest day was 19degC on August 24.
