Late-night thugs believed to be targeting lone pedestrians

Greymouth police want to urgently hear from victims of a group that is alleged to be dishing out indiscriminate late night beatings to lone pedestrians.
The Greymouth Star has three anecdotal accounts of four men alighting from a cruising vehicle and assaulting pedestrians in recent attacks. However, in each case the victim has declined to report the incident to police.
Senior sergeant Alyson Ealam said today that the reports were “disturbing” but police were powerless to act unless they are given a description of the car and the offenders.
‘If this is happening we want to stamp it out but we need a description of the car and, if possible the registration number,” Mrs Ealam said.” We would also like descriptions of the offenders and their clothing. It’s not something that we want happening on our streets.”
In a reverse situation it was a case of one man on to four in an incident at the Tai Poutini Polytechnic flats in the early hours of Saturday.
A group from the flats had traded insults
with another clutch of young men prompting one man to enter the flats and attack the occupants.
“Four men from the flats were treated at hospital for minor injuries, one with a broken nose,” Mrs Ealam said. Inquiries into that incident were continuing.
