Hokitika a whisker off 150

Hokitika Lions Club president-elect Jim Butzbach, left, Hokitika Goldrush 150 committee vice-chairman David Verrall and Micheal McEwen, of Heritage Hokitika, pictured with an image of one of the town’s bearded founders, William Revell, show off their growth ahead of ‘The Great Beard Growing Competition’ as part of the 150th celebrations. Mr Verrall said the event would encourage men to adopt the rugged gold diggers ‘full-spade’ look. “It was very much a trend on the goldfields to have a full-spade beard. But, of course, I’m sure there will be lots of moustaches and other beards in celebration of the hirsute male.” Details of the event are still being planned for the 150th schedule on December 20, but it could include some sort of parade.
