Grey Main School’s Year 8 maths whiz team — Daniel McLeay-McNish, left, Joseph Bertrand, Cody Robinson and George Rubbo — claimed victory in the regional Westamaths competition, held at Reefton Area School on Monday. About 200 pupils in 18 teams from Fox Glacier to Granity took part in the competition, in which maths brains are pitted against each other and the clock to solve complex equations. The Grey Main team was the only one to achieve a perfect score of 100 — and with six minutes still left to go. Next Wednesday, they will head to Christchurch to compete in the Cantamaths competition, which draws about 80 teams from Years 6, 7 and 8.
