The Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade has been named as this year’s winner of the Emergency Management Qualification (Emqual) training in excellence award.
The national accolade for urban firefighters was presented to the brigade at its annual general meeting on Tuesday evening, coinciding with Volunteer Awareness Week.
It recognises the accreditation efforts of its 24 members, who together completed level two of the programme, becoming the the first brigade in the country to collectively do so.
Emqual chief executive Bill Robertson, who presented the award in Hokitika, said the training award reflected the brigade’s commitment to the community and to the gaining of skills and knowledge required to perform their role. “While the award takes account of unit standards and qualifications gained within the year, by individuals, it is more than this,” Mr Robertson said.
“It is a recognition of a team effort, commitment of those who lead training, provide assessment and of the support received from the wider community and from the New Zealand Fire Service.”
