West Coast Regional Council engineer Wayne Moen, right, and Westland Contractors Ltd operations manager Brendon Russ look over progress on the first section of the 650m Hokitika beach seawall yesterday. Mr Moen, who designed the structure, said work was on-track to meet the December deadline. This week, a liner designed specifically for coastal protection works will continue to be laid before the rock armouring is placed. The total rock works are to span over 20m seaward, with the bottom of the gradient finishing about 5m below the original beach level. Mr Russ said the sand banks resulting from the excavation were also working as a bund to prevent seawater getting into the construction area.
