Erosion eating away at shelter

Rex and Jackie Scott enjoy a ‘last breakfast’ in the Soroptomists’ shelter, as the waves ate away the foreshore yesterday. The shelter looks like it will wash into the ocean any day now. The Westland District Council said the cost of moving the shelter would be greater than the cost of replacing it. The council will not be spending any money on trying to prevent further damage to the shore because it has run out of money, chief executive Tanya Winter said earlier this month. The shelter was erected in 1998.
