The Labour Party’s new leader has strong ties to the West Coast that stretch right back to the heady days when ‘King Dick’ Seddon was premier.
Richard Seddon is New Zealand’s longest serving prime minister, but his political career started as the first mayor of Kumara, and later MP for Hokitika.
Newly-elected Labour Party leader David Cunliffe revealed during his visit to Blackball last week he was related to Seddon.
Mr Cunliffe was in meetings today but according to the Seddon family tree, his grandmother Blanche married Dick Seddon’s nephew, who was also a Cunliffe.
To put it another way, Seddon’s sister Phoebe married William Cunliffe and their 10th child Bill Cunliffe married Blanche in 1914.
David Cunliffe’s father, who worked on the railways, was born in Ngahere in 1915.
